World Book Day - a day to celebrate your literary love! This is a photograph of my son, Jacob, with all the books I have read to him since he was born. Obviously not includng the kids books we read on a daily basis (our favourites include The Dinosaur that Pooed Christmas, Tyrannosaurus Drip and The Gruffalo).

Every night since my son was born over 4 years ago I have read to him at bedtime. Reading is something I have always loved and I knew once my son was born that I wouldn't always be able to make time to read for myself so I decided to read to him instead.

Working on the assumption that a newborn isn't really listening to a story, just my voice, I bought books that I remembered reading from my childhood. The Magic Faraway Tree stories by Enid Blyton and Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland to start with.

After a while I decided that I would try some classics so I branched out and tried reading some Charles Dickens, then I read Gulliver's Travels and Robinson Crusoe.

More recently we've been working our way through the Harry Potter books. I am already a big fan of these books, I think that J.K Rowling's stories are fantastic escapism, allowing a thorough exercising of your imagination and now that Jacob is 4 he is really listening to these stories, well, until he falls asleep anyway.

So when I asked Jacob what character he wanted to dress up as for World Book Day at school this year he replied "Santa" to start with (kids!) but he quickly followed with "Harry Potter". We are currently reading Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, we try to get through at least half a chapter a night.

He is excited to go to school tomorrow dressed as his favourite book character but not nearly as excited as I am to know that my little boy seems to share my love for books.

What is your favourite book? Who is your favourite character from a book?

However you celebrate World Book Day, just take a moment to stand still and marvel at the written word.
