World Book Day 2014 celebrated by Secret Smile Photography, newborn, baby, child and family photographer in Leeds, Morley, LS27
World Book Day 6 March 2014 at Secret Smile Photography

World Book Day is my favourite day of the year (except for Christmas Day) because it is an official day for celebrating everything literature. I posted last year about World Book Day and how I had passed my love of reading onto my 5 year old Son, last year's blog post can be found here.

This is from last year and the stack of books piled up next to Jacob are all the books I have read to him since he was born. I read every night to my son - a 'big book' (such as The Rascally Cake, The Gruffalo or The Dinosaur That Pooped a Planet) and a 'small book' which is a novel. We still try to read a chapter a night as a wind-down for my son when he is in bed and it helps me carry on reading when I rarely find time to do so for myself. At the moment we are finishing up Roald Dahl's 'Boy: Tales of Childhood' which horrifies and enthralls Jacob in equal measure, safe to say I would never get him to attend boarding school now that we've read this book.

My love of reading prompted me to start a personal project with my photography by photographing children in various sets to represent some well loved children's books. This project got shelved as I found moving into the new studio in January and all the wonderful people I have photographed since so very time consuming (I am not complaining at all!) so when I looked back through my old files to see if I had enough images upon a literary theme to cobble together a collage for this post I was genuinely surprised by how many images I had managed to incorporate books or a book theme into! Here are just a few of them.

Looking through these images I have decided to re-kindle my passion for the personal project so watch out for casting calls over the next few months for babies and children that I need specifically for my book-themed shoots. I am so excited to get this started which really, is what World Book Day is all about - inspiring people to read and be creative. My son loves reading so much that he is painstakingly reading Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland to me because a) he can (mostly, about 50% of the words we have to spell out and try with phonics) and b) because he knows it is my favourite book in the whole world. That is my celebration this World Book Day - I have passed on my love for words and reading to last another generation.

Jacob's school are doing something a bit different to last year at pre-school. Instead of dressing up the children in reception are being asked to bring in their favourite book along with a pillow, a blanket, their pyjamas and a torch so that after a morning of creative writing and reading each others' first book reviews (Jacob's was about Little Rabbit Foo Foo and read "Little Rabbit Foo Foo is naughty so the good fairy turns him into a goonie. He still wants to bop things") they will all get cosy in the classroom in the afternoon, drink hot chocolate, have a biscuit and listen to each other's story books. I have major envy, I want to join in!

Are your littleuns doing anything this World Book Day at school or at home? I'd love to hear! If you don't want to comment on this blog post, please feel free to pop over to Facebook and let me know.

Remember - you're never too young to love a good book, as the gorgeous newborn Martha proves:
