The Yorkshire Sculpture Park

Do you have that place you can go to when life gets a little bit hectic? That place that when you arrive you can feel your worries fading into the background? That place you can go to heal your soul? My place is the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

I went along last weekend with my partner and my son just for a wander around in the fresh air. The Yorkshire Sculpture Park is so big and spread out that even when the car parks are full and more people are still arriving it never seems to feel crowded. We walk a different way around the park each time we go, the sculptures move around the park (not at night on weird legs or anything sinister like that) and new exhibits appear from time to time. This time of year the bluebells are out, a much coveted occasion for many outdoor photographers. I love seeing photographers posting their images from mini shoots in the bluebells with families and children but alas, I am not an outdoor photographer. In fact, my 7 year old takes better outdoor photographs than I do. I wonder which ones you can tell he took in this blog post? I bet you can't! BUT we did see bluebells, in a small fenced-off area not far from the lake so I took a photograph of them for posperity. Beautiful though they are I don't want to spend a day in them photographing mini shoots, I'll leave that to the far more talented location photographers out there!

We love the space and the fresh air, I love the sculptures, my son loves the ice cream (and some of the sculptures to be fair although he's lost interest somewhat since his favourite sculpture moved on to pastures new and we've yet to locate it again within the park). The new Kaws exhibit of giant wooden figures who reminded us all of Mickey Mouse characters was fun to look around and, as ever, my favourite sculpture of the trees made from recycled bits of garden furniture, toilets and dog kennels had to be explored.

There's so much to see and do in the park even if you don't love sculptures. There are trees to climb, some sculptures you can interact with, some you can run your hands over, you can walk around the lake, grab an ice cream at one of the cafes and just kick back on a picnic blanket and watch the world go by. This is the place I come to for some quiet peace of mind. My son can run off his energy, the dogs can get a great walk (although we didn't take them last weekend as it was too hot for the Saint Bernard) and we can get some fresh air in a beautiful setting.

A new exhibit of silver tulip shaped sculptures was my son's new favourite that we found towards the end of our walk. He took his self portrait in one of them and I absolutely LOVE the photograph. I LOVE that my 7 year old son even thought to take the photograph. I am going to get the image he took framed and hung in the living room.

So if you live within driving distance and want a truly wonderful day out in a stunning location where you can take some time out to breathe, relax and capture some wonderful images of your family in the process, I thoroughly recommend The Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

My place to go to when I need to breathe and think is the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Where is yours?
