The importance of editing - part 1

Sometimes people are surprised that I do not include a disk of all the images from a session for free as part of their session fee. This makes me a little sad because there are photographers who do so and that is fine by me, I have nothing against photographers whose business model is to provide a shoot with all the digital images for free but my business model doesn't. I won't go into the ins and outs of the costs of running a studio, the correct insurance and various other things (that is a post for another time) but I will start with what goes into every single image I produce for you from your photo shoot.

I try to get as much right in camera as possible but there is always editing to be done. I will use this final edited image of gorgeous baby Sylvie to show you what goes into a 'quick' edit.

This photograph has been uploaded straight from the camera in 'RAW' format into a program I use for cataloguing. These images are then sifted through so that I can discard all the images where the subject has their eyes closed or is too similar to another image in the batch or perhaps the image is slightly out of focus or the pose is unflattering.

This particular photograph has had relatively little editing done to it. This is a list of what has been done:

  • the planks on the backdrop have been straightened to correct the perspective of me not being stood directly over her when I took the photograph
  • I have taken some of the 'brightness' out of the tutu as it was glaring a little
  • I have 'cloned' out Sylvie's nappy which was visible on the left hand side
  • her eyes have been sharpened a little so they sparkle a little more
  • the colours of the background have been tweaked so that they are a little brighter but I have kept Sylvie's skin tone the same
  • I have altered the contrast slightly to ensure the shadows were well defined
  • I have cropped the image to look more pleasing to the eye without too much dead space using the 'rule of thirds'.

It's not much and takes me around 15 minutes to edit each image. I never batch process, each image you get in your gallery is hand-edited. I want every image you see from your session to be the best it possibly can be and I am always improving and growing. I am a member of the Guild of Photographers who run a monthly competition for images which I have started entering so I can get feedback on what can be improved about my images. This is an investment not only in myself but also in you because I want you to have the best experience of Secret Smile Photography as well as the best images that will last you a lifetime.

I hope that this blog post has explained a little about what goes into each image you get from your photo shoot and perhaps explains why there is a 2 week lead time for your images (depending on my editing backlog) and why my business model cannot support me supplying a full session (beween 25 and 40 images) on a disk for as little as £45.

More of these comparisons to come soon. If you have any queries at all please feel free to drop me an email lisa@secretsmilephotography.com or phone 07760 887946.
