Elf on the Shelf the definitive guide by Secret Smile Photography Christmas 2017 Leeds child photography studio

Elf on the Shelf

So it's that time of year when the 'elf' comes to visit your household, oh the magical premise that a scout elf comes to visit your child to check they are behaving well enough to get onto Santa's 'nice list'. It's a lovely concept, children all over the world love the idea of the naughty elf coming to visit and they look forward to seeing what cheeky antics the elf has gotten up to in their house overnight. Magical. Except for the parents who have to come up with increasingly naughty and creative ideas for the elf to do each night.

At a time of year when parents are already overwhelmed working Christmas overtime, shopping for the perfect gifts, Christmas parties, trips to visit Santa and everything else that goes with the festive season (by the way, have you ordered your turkey from the butchers yet? Don't leave it too late!).

As a helping hand this Christmas I thought I would put together the definitive Elf on the Shelf guide. You're welcome.

The arrival of your scout elf

If your elf did not arrive in your house on the 1st of December don't worry. There's still time to catch up. The elf's arrival is very important - it sets the tone for the entire elf season. If you write a handwritten note for the elf's arrival you will need to write all elf correspondence in the same elf handwriting, and it can't look like YOUR handwriting. Kids are clever, don't put yourself in a corner of uncomfortable questions this December! I recommend you spend an hour on the laptop typing out little notes from your elf, there are some great free printables available:

24 days of elf

So each day your elf will sit quietly and monitor your child's behaviour and each night you will need to come up with something new and cheeky for your elf to have done with his time off. Here are some great ideas for you to use
