Editing for safety with newborns, babies and children by Lisa at Secret Smile Photography, specialist newborn and baby photographer in Leeds
 Baby and Newborn Photography ASsociation

I am proud to announce that I have been accepted into the Baby and Newborn Photography ASsociation which is a body in the UK promoting SAFE baby posing for newborn photographers. The industry is, unfortunately, not regulated but BANPAS exist to help educate photographers in safety techniques and empower parents to help them find a newborn photographer who has successfully demonstrated that they SAFELY pose newborns during their sessions.

Professional newborn photographers will NEVER put your baby in a situation or position that is unsafe. A spotter should be used at all times when using props and for images like the one above a composite should always be used.

Simply put - a composite image is several images taken with hands on the baby at all times that are then merged together in photo editing software. The image above was a composite of the three images below:

Another example is the image of baby with her head in her hands. Newborn babies cannot support their own heads and to try it would be dangerous without the use of a composite. Here are the composite images:

These images were then put together in photo editing software to create this beautiful image of baby Poppy holding her head in her hands:

I always work safely with my precious newborn clients and I believe that this puts parents at ease knowing their most precious bundle is in very safe hands. If you would like to know more about BANPAS and the work they do here is the website: www.banpas.co.uk and there is a section for parents as well as a member directory, here is my page on the member directory: Secret Smile Photography.

To see how I work safely with older babies here is a previous post about the importance of editing.

To book your newborn photography shoot please email lisa@secretsmilephotography.com. Advance booking is recommended so I can definitely fit you in for your session before baby is 14 days old.

Until next time...

Lisa x
